Discounting delayed and probabilistic rewards: Processes and traits

چکیده
Discounting of delayed and probabilistic rewards was examined in two relatively large samples (Ns > 100). For both types of rewards, a hyperbola-like discounting function provided good fits to individual data. Amount of reward had opposite effects on temporal and probability discounting: Smaller delayed rewards were discounted more steeply than larger delayed rewards, whereas larger probabilistic rewards were discounted more steeply than smaller probabilistic rewards. The nonlinear scaling parameter of the hyperbola-like function was larger for larger probabilistic rewards, but did not vary with the amount of delayed reward. Taken together, these findings suggest that despite the similar form of the temporal and probability discounting functions, separate processes may underlie the discounting of delayed and probabilistic rewards. Finally, weak to moderate positive correlations were observed between the discounting of delayed and probabilistic rewards. This finding is inconsistent with the notion of an ‘‘impulsiveness’’ trait that links an inability to delay gratification with a tendency to gamble and take risks. 2003 Elsevier B.V. How many impulsivities? A discounting perspective.
People discount the value of delayed and uncertain outcomes, and how steeply individuals discount is thought to reflect how impulsive they are. From this perspective, steep discounting of delayed outcomes (which fails to maximize long-term welfare) and shallow discounting of probabilistic outcomes (which fails to adequately take risk into account) reflect the same trait of impulsivity. Despite ...
متن کاملDiscounting of monetary rewards that are both delayed and probabilistic: delay and probability combine multiplicatively, not additively.
The value of an outcome is affected both by the delay until its receipt (delay discounting) and by the likelihood of its receipt (probability discounting). Despite being well-described by the same hyperboloid function, delay and probability discounting involve fundamentally different processes, as revealed, for example, by the differential effects of reward amount. Previous research has focused...
متن کاملAmount of reward has opposite effects on the discounting of delayed and probabilistic outcomes.
Previous research has shown that the value of large future rewards is discounted less steeply than is the value of small future rewards. These experiments extended this line of research to probabilistic rewards. Two experiments replicated the standard findings for delayed rewards but demonstrated that amount has an opposite effect on the discounting of probabilistic rewards. That is, large prob...

Individual discounting rates for different types of delayed reward are typically assumed to reflect a single, underlying trait of impulsivity. Recently, we showed that discounting rates are orders of magnitude steeper for directly consumable liquid rewards than for monetary rewards (Jimura et al., 2009), raising the question of whether discounting rates for different types of reward covary at t...

AbstractIntroduction: Delay discounting (DD) means prefering small immediate rewards to large delayed rewards. This study was to assess delay discounting and the correlation of our findings with that of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI).Method: In a cross-sectional study, DD and time perspective were investigated in 93 medical interns by means of a computer software and ZTPI. In d...
